Conor McGregor targets ATT fighters, wants to face Dustin Poirier at UFC 178

Conor McGregor made quick work of Diego Brandao at UFC Fight Night Dublin, winning via first-round TKO, and isn’t looking to take time off. In fact, he wants to fight Dustin Poirier at UFC 178 scheduled for September 27 in Las Vegas.

Poirier is currently the no. 6 ranked featherweight in the UFC (McGregor sits at no. 12), is 16-3 as a pro, and is riding a three-fight winning streak. He’s also coming off a second-round TKO win over Akira Corassani last April at the TUF Nations Finale.

Additionally, he fights out of American Top Team, the same team as Cole Miller, who was originally slated to face McGregor at Fight Night Dublin but had to withdraw due to an injured thumb.

Poirier has been Tweeting that he wants a piece of the Irishman, but McGregor wonders why he didn’t step up to replace his team mate when he had the chance.

“That [fighting Poirier] would be perfect for me. His teammate Cole Miller, he pulled out. You’re trying to tell me that Dustin Poirier, Nik Lentz, both top 10 guys, no fights scheduled, didn’t know about Cole’s injury? They would’veknown before the UFC would’ve known. And yet nothing. They didn’t campaign for this. This is a main-event slot. It’s a big, big event. And yet there wasn’t a peep out of both of them.

So I know he doesn’t want that fight. He can pretend that he wants the fight and send out tweets and this and that. Let’s do it. One by one, I’ll take every single one of them out.”

Nevertheless, “The Notorious” wants a crack at “The Diamond” when UFC 178 comes around. It would be a quick turnaround for McGregor, but given that he took little damage in his fight with Brandao and has a ton of momentum in his favor, a fight on the September card seems doable.

UFC 178 already has the Jon Jones-Alexander Gustafsson rematch as its headliner, along with such fights as Dominick Cruz vs. Takeya Mizugaki, Tim Kennedy vs. Yoel Romero, and Cat Zingano vs. Amanda Nunes.
