Dave Galera becomes first Filipino UFC fighter; set to debut in Singapore

By Gab Pangalangan
History has just been made as the first Filipino national has been signed by the UFC in Dave Galera.

Known as “The Scarecrow,” Galera hails from the famed Baguio-based gym Team Lakay, which is widely recognized as the top MMA team in the Philippines and one of the very best in Asia. Galera is undefeated in his pro career with a record of 5-0, with all his wins coming via stoppage (2 via TKO and 3 via submission).

Galera is also a former URCC champion, and though he isn’t as well-known as his other team mates like Eduard Folayang or Honorio Banario, he’s still a very well-rounded and promising fighter, which is why it comes as no surprise that he was signed by the UFC.

Galera is set to make his UFC debut in January at UFC Fight Night 34, which will be the promotion’s first event in Southeast Asia. “The Scarecrow” will enter the event in Singapore against home-town favorite Royston Wee.

Wee holds a record of 2-0, with both wins coming via submission. He is also in a class of his own as he is the first Singaporean national to fight for the UFC. The fighter from Impact MMA definitely has a lot on his shoulders as he fights in front of his home crowd.

Both these bantamweight fighters are making history for their respective countries and will want to put on a show and pick up the biggest win of their lives come January 4th.

Here’s how the UFC Fight Night 34 card is shaping up so far:
