Drex Zamboanga wins URCC bantamweight belt, stops MMA vet de Lara

Zamboanga URCC bantamweight belt

Drex Zamboanga is the new URCC bantamweight champion.

Drex Zamboanga scored the biggest win of his young career, defeating MMA vet Rex de Lara in the so-called “Battle of T-rex” to become the new URCC bantamweight champion on Friday.

Zamboanga imposed his will against the returning de Lara in the first round. He started the fight with leg kicks from a distance to nullify de Lara’s power. The 35-year-old tried to press Zamboanga to the cage and even landed a takedown, but Zamboanga was able to steal back some momentum later in the round.

In the second round, de Lara opened with haymakers, but Zamboanga used his wrestling to weather the storm. He nullified de Lara’s strikes with a clinch, later followed by a takedown.

In the third round, it was all Zamboanga.

The BJJ blue belt was all over the former PXC standout on the ground, working on submissions while raining down elbow strikes that proved to be too much for de Lara, leading to the stoppage win in the waning moments of the round.

With the title-clinching win, Zamboanga now rides a four-fight win streak and improve his record to 7-2. More important, he adds another gold to his mantle since becoming the Fullcon bantamweight champion in 2016.

De Lara, on the other hand, ends his impressive three-fight streak to even out his record at 6-6.
