Herbert Burns, Jake Butler and Angela Lee from Evolve MMA were successful in their respective bouts at ONE: Odyssey of Champions card in Indonesia. “Unstoppable” Angela Lee opened up the night with a submission win over Mona Samir in the strawweight bout.
The newest member of Asia’s most decorated fight team shrugged off Samir’s numerous takedown attempts, punishing her with knees and hammer fists to the head.
Samir tried to outmuscle her younger opponent, but her aggressiveness proved to be costly when Lee stuffed one of her takedowns and took her back. A number of short shots to the side of the head flattened Samir out and Lee capitalized with a rear-naked choke finish.
Light heavyweight prospect Jake Butler utilized his wrestling to edge Cristiano Kaminishi and grab his sixth victory inside the ONE Championship cage.
The former NCAA Division I standout outworked the HEAT veteran to earn the nod from the judges. Butler now rides on a three-fight win streak after losing to Sylvain Potard in 2013.
In one of the most anticipated fights of the night, Herbert Burns inched closer to the title when he overcame the dangerous Timofey Nastyukhin in their 145-pound bout, winning via rear-naked choke.
“The Blaze” showed improved striking. He exchanged blows with the hard-hitting Nastyukhin before dragging the Russian to the ground. Nasty tried to defend Burns’ submission game using all of his might, but eventually succumbed to the Brazilian’s superior skills, tapping out at the 1:35 mark of the first round.
Burns impressive win is his sixth straight MMA victory, and fifth under the ONE banner. Overall, it was a successful night for Evolve MMA, winning three out of their four fights. Leandro Ataides lost to the debuting Aleksey Butorin via devastating TKO.
