ONE champ to another: Bibiano Fernandes open to Martin Nguyen’s challenge

Bibiano Fernandes Martin Nguyen Superfight

Another “superfight” may be in store as a Martin Nguyen – Bibiano Fernandes title fight could be in the works.

Fresh off his historic win in Manila, two-division champ Martin Nguyen is not slowing down. He now has Bibiano Fernandes’ ONE bantamweight championship in sight.

Following his second-round knockout win of Eduard Folayang a few days ago, “The Situ-Asian” publicly asked to face long-time Brazilian champ Fernandes. Fortunately for him, it seems that the promotion is headed to that direction as the promotion has already reached out to Fernandes.

In a phone interview with “The Flash”, he revealed to Dojo Drifter that ONE Championship has approached him about the possibility of facing Martin Nguyen on his next defense.

“Somebody from ONE Championship called me and asked me ‘What do you think about fighting Martin Nguyen?’ I said, ‘For sure, I’ll fight him. I have to defend my belt, I’ll fight him.”

“He said that (Martin) will go down and challenge me. No problem. I have no problems defending my belt against him.”

Both men are on a tear in their respective divisions. Martin is on a five-fight win streak at featherweight, which includes avenging his loss to former champ Marat Gafurov and a win over Folayang, both wins coming via right-hand KO.

Fernandes on the other hand, holds perhaps the longest win streak in the region and in company history. The AMC Pankration standout hasn’t experienced defeat since 2011 and owns the most title defenses in ONE Championship history with six.

While no date of the fight is set, Fernandes is looking forward to the possibility of defending his title against fellow champion Nguyen.

“I don’t know because he (ONE FC official) didn’t say when but for me, I’m excited. For sure that would be a good fight and I’m excited to defend my belt,” Fernandes said.

“Let’s do it. I’m ok with that.”
