Former UFC contender Gegard Mousasi to headline Bellator 185

Dutch-Iranian middleweight Gegard Mousasi is set to headline Bellator 185.

After four years, the UFC and Gegard Mousasi have parted ways. Mousasi has signed a multi-fight contract with Bellator MMA, and he’s already has a big fight lined up.

A perenial contender inside the Octagon, Mousasi (42-6-2) adds plenty of star power to the promotion’s middleweight division. Prior to his signing, he was on a five-fight streak and was coming of a TKO win of former UFC middleweight champ Chris Weidman at UFC 210.

“The Dreamcatcher” is no stranger to the Pinoy MMA fans having visited the country twice. The first time was in the first ever UFC Fight Night Manila card in 2015 and most recently, for a promo tour with the said promotion.

Mousasi is set to make his Bellator MMA debut this October, facing former titleholder Alexander Shlemenko to headline Bellator 185.

“I’m thrilled to welcome Gegard to the growing Bellator family,” said Bellator President Scott Coker said in a press release. “He’s one of the most well-rounded fighters in all of MMA and can compete in multiple divisions, so that really opens up some exciting matchmaking opportunities for us and for the fans. We’re looking forward to having him compete on Spike very soon.”

Mousasi reunites with Coker since competing under the Strikeforce banner and is expected to make a run for the Bellator 185-pound belt currently held by Rafael Carvalho. At the same time, he has expressed interest in competing in the light-heavyweight division, where he also found success in the past.

“I am looking forward to fighting in Bellator,” added Mousasi. “I have a long-standing relationship with Scott Coker that goes back many years. Be ready, I am coming after the Bellator middleweight championship.”
