A potential back-to-back victory for returning bantamweight John Dodson takes a halt courtesy of John Lineker and his iron chin.

Former 2-time flyweight title contender John “Magician” Dodson (18-8 MMA, (7-3 UFC) fails to take home back-to-back wins in his return to the bantamweight division. Dodson’s prospective streak was hindered by John Lineker (29-7 MMA, 10-2 UFC), the number four ranked bantamweight in the world.

The scheduled main event of UFC Fight Night in Portland, Oregon between Dodson and Lineker was supposed to be a bantamweight match. However, the Brazilian missed the weight limit. The contest was later moved to catchweight of 136.5 pounds.

In the opening round, Dodson threw a clean head kick, but Lineker’s chin impressively prevailed. The stand-up went on to the later rounds and their strikes and movements were on display. Lineker’s punches to Dodson in the fourth and fifth rounds landed crisp in a couple of engagements. Only 5 takedowns were tallied in the 15-minute contest.

According to FightMetric, Dodson landed 52 percent of his significant strikes while Lineker only managed 28 percent. However, the judges saw it a different way. Based on the tallied scorecard posted on MMAFighting, Sal D’Amato and Glenn Trowbridge both had 48-47 in favor of Lineker. Marcos Rosales, meanwhile, scored the fight 48-47 for Dodson.

In an interview with MMAJunkie after the fight, John Dodson said, “I still look handsome as hell.” The Filipino-American fighter who visited the Philippines earlier this year added, “He came out looking like Frankenstein, so I don’t know what’s up.” Despite the missed weight, Lineker is still optimistic that he will get a shot at Dominick Cruz’s belt.

With the victory over Dodson, Lineker is now on a six-fight win streak in the Octagon since 2014.
