Lausa yields to Shelton in UFC Sydney undercard bout

Pinoy UFC flyweight Jenel Lausa struggles in his return to Australia yielding to Eric Shelton in the undercard of Fight Night Sydney.

The 28-year-old fighter from Concepcion, Iloilo started the fight well as he scored an early takedown. But Shelton quickly turned the tide, getting a takedown of his own by the end of the round.

Lausa tried to secure a guillotine choke following another Shelton takedown in the second frame. However, “Showtime” took Lausa’s back and worked on top of the Filipino throughout the round, pressuring the Filipino against the cage while clobbering him with punches and elbows.

Down in the scorecards after two rounds, “The Demolition Man” threw overhand punches in a last-ditch effort. Noticing the attack, his 26-year old opponent wisely took Lausa to the ground and again landed scored via ground and pound. In the end, Shelton got all the judges’ nod: 30-27, 30-26, 30-25.

Shelton’s dominance was also evident in the fight statistics. He had 186 total strikes and spent more than 8 minutes top position against the Filipino fighter. Lausa, on the other hand, only had 11 strikes landed with a minute in top position.

The victory gives Shelton (11-4 MMA, 1-2 UFC) his first UFC win after three fights. Lausa (7-4 MMA, 1-2 UFC) on the other hand, absorbs his first back-to-back loss of his career after making his successful Octagon debut last year.
