UFC 217 will feature a top welterweight match-up.

Last June, Stephen Thompson and Jorge Masvidal were asked about the possibility of fighting each other. Little did we know that it was bound to happen in one of UFC’s biggest cards this year.

Now, Thompson (13-2-1) and Masvidal (32-12) get to duke it out this November, as their match-up has been added to the UFC 217 card happening this November 4, 2017 at Madison Square Garden in New York City.

MMAFighting.com’s Ariel Helwani first reported the news.

Both men will try to bounce back from close decision defeats in their recent outings and return to contention. The 34-year-old “Wonderboy” yielded to reigning welterweight champion Tyron Woodley after a draw in their first encounter. “Gamebred,” on the other hand, lost to Damien Maia last May for the right to fight for the belt.

Prior to the announcement of the fight, it wasn’t the first time the idea of the two fighting was brought up. The two were asked about fighting each other during a Q&A session ahead of UFC Fight Night Singaporeand expressed optimism about it.

“We definitely want it,” Thompson said, “We want to get together, get out there in the Octagon and face off. I mean, obviously, you saw his last fight, which I thought he won against Damian Maia, (he’s) a very good striker. I think it’s gonna be fireworks!”

The Thompson-Masvidal bout is the latest addition to the stacked card headlined by the title fight between middlweight champ Michael Bisping and the returning Georges St. Pierre. In addition, Joanna Jędrzejczyk and Cody Garbrandt will defend their belts against Rose Namajunas and T.J. Dillashaw respectively.
