UAAP 80 Judo: UST, Ateneo hailed as men’s co-champions while Lady Tigresses reign supreme

UAAP 80 Judo

UAAP 80 Judo–The University of Santo Tomas (UST) continued its dominant run on the mats. And for the first time ever, co-champions were crowned.

Thomasians Dither Tablan and Almira Ruiz led the way in the men’s and women’s categories. The 5-foot-10 juggernaut Tablan stamped his class in the heavyweight category, outlasting Rafael Cardiente of Ateneo in the finals, giving the judokas from España the advantage at the end of the day one competitions.

UST’s Ruiz defeated fellow Thomasian Devrah Devaras en route to her first place finish. Her impressive showing also earned her MVP honors.

By the conclusion of the two-day event held at the De La Salle Santiago Zobel gym in Alabang, UST and Ateneo de Manila University were crowned as co-champions for the first time in UAAP history. Both schools shared identical points, wins and medal tally, leading to the decision.

As of this writing, it is not known whether the tie will be broken or both schools will remain champions as the UAAP board will look into the matter.

For the women’s division, the Lady Tigresses were crowned champions for the fourth straight year. UE and UP settled for silver and bronze overall.
