UFC 216 results: Demetrious Johnson makes history; Ferguson claims interim belt

Demetrious Johnson got his historic win while Tony Ferguson became the interim lightweight champ, submitting Kevin Lee in UFC 216.

Flyweight champ Demetrious Johnson has cemented his name in history books with a 5th round submission win over Ray Borg at UFC 216.

The number one pound-for-pound fighter in the world was a picture of dominance throughout the entire fight. He was hardly threatened by his challenger, shrugging of a rear-naked choke attempt by Borg in the second round.

His supremacy was also evident in the stat sheets: Johnson connected 172 of his 212 total strikes in contrast to Borg’s 22 of 39. He also connected all of his eight takedown attempts to Borg’s three, after clocking in 17:28 of control time.

Johnson continued his mastery until the final five minutes. “Mighty Mouse” threw Borg to the air with a suplex before locking in an armbar mid-air, ending the bout at 3:15 mark of the round. With the win, Johnson secured the record for the most consecutive title defenses inside the Octagon (11), surpassing former middleweight champ Anderson Silva (10).

In the main event, Tony Ferguson finally claimed the UFC interim lightweight belt with a third-round win over Kevin Lee.

After a slow start where he ended the round at the receiving end of Lee’s ground-and-pound, “El Cucuy” found his range against Lee using his unorthodox striking.

Lee, who not only cut 19 pounds prior the fight but also suffered staph infection on his left chest, appeared weaker as they headed into the third round. Ferguson took took advantage, locking in a deep armbar before securing a triangle choke to win the fight.

Additionally, Former heavyweight champ Fabricio Werdum made quick work of Walt Harris on the undercard. Also, lightweights Lando Vannata and Bobby Green fought to a draw, but brought the crowd on its feet in their all out war.
