UFC 217 Results: “Wonderboy” Thompson dismantles Masvidal

UFC 217 results: Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson picks up the decision victory.

Thompson was practically flawless in his first win after back-to-back title losses to current welterweight champ Tyron Woodley. In his three-round bout with Jorge Masvidal, Thompson would not be denied.

Round 1:
It was a feel out process from the get-go. Masvidal attacked the legs of Thompson, but “Wonderboy” maintained his distance in a wide karate stance. Thompson scored a knockdown with a side kick to the body.

Round 2:
It was more of the same in the second round, but in this round, the speed advantage of Thompson was more apparent. He’d beat Masvidal to the punch and was confident enough to keep his hands by his waist, knowing that his opponent could close the distance fast enough. He then scored a knockdown with a straight punch off of a sidestep. Masvidal saw some success in this round clipping Thompson with a hook and threatening with the takedown, but it the round was clearly Thompson’s.

Round 3:
Thompson turned up the action in the third and mixed head and body shots. Masvidal, a brawler by trade, was unable to find his rhythm and mount any significant offense. Thompson ended the round with a trip after catching Masvidal’s kick.

The fight ended with Thompson getting the unanimous decision win: 30-27, 30-27, 30-26.
