UFC Melbourne Recap: Whittaker takes spotlight, Lausa makes a successful debut

UFC Melbourne recap

No Luke Rockhold, no problem. Whittaker put on a show. Here’s UFC Melbourne Recap.

Robert Whittaker, “The Ultimate Fighter: The Smashes” winner, put up an exciting main event match against a very game Derek Brunson. “The Reaper” didn’t disappoint the home crowd; he claimed the victory via first round TKO. He has also received Performance of the Night and Fight of the Night bonuses.

Whittaker’s victory marks his six straight as a middleweight since his loss to Stephen Thompson in the welterweight division over two years ago. More importantly, it moves him in the title contender picture of an already stacked division.

Aussies dominate
Apart from Whittaker, Australian fighters represented well that night. UFC vets Daniel Kelly and Damien Brown together with newcomers Alex Volkanovski and Tyson Pedro picked up wins for Team Down Under. Volkanovski made his UFC debut after vacating his PXC featherweight title. That makes it six-for-eight for the Australian side including Ben Nguyen who has moved to the country for years now.

Jenel Lausa wins Octagon debut
The long wait was worth it for Filipino Jenel Lausa as he made a successful entry to the UFC. He defeated Yao ZhiKui to kick off the Melbourne card. A local boxing champ and one-time sparring partner of no less than Manny Pacquiao, “The Demolition Man” showed his striking prowess in the fight. The former PXC flyweight champion unleashed vicious strikes that rocked Yao many times throughout the fight, winning via unanimous decision.

With the victory, Lausa replicates Mark Eddiva‘s feat in his promotional debut. The Team Lakay featherweight won against Jumabieke Tuerxun in Macau last 2014.
