Ulka Sasaki believes victory over Formiga opens doors to the flyweight title

Ulka Sasaki

After defeating Justin Scoggins in UFC Singapore, Ulka Sasaki looks to get closer at the title with a win in Japan.

Rising flyweight Ulka Sasaki believes a title shot could be just around the corner with a victory against Brazilian Jussier Formiga.

Fresh off his come-from-behind win over Justin Scoggins, the 27-year old Japanese takes a step closer to title contention against Formiga. For him, the current landscape of the division gives him the opportunity to prove himself since anyone can be beaten on any given day–including him.

“My impression of Formiga is he’s one of the top BJJ guys in the division and he can also strike hard, so he’s actually close to one of the best complete, all around fighters. That’s my impression,” says Sasaki during the UFC Fight Night Japan media scrum leading up to their fight.

Sasaki entered the UFC back in 2014, earning a record of 1-2. Things turn around after he went down to 125-pound division, losing only once to Wilson Reis via decision. According to him, being the bigger guy physically helps him maximize his skills inside the cage.

“One of the main reasons I came down to flyweight is to utilize my physique and length. Nobody has that kind of physique in flyweight and that’s gonna be big advantage if I fight DJ, Mighty Mouse so I feel very comfortable,” he says.

Formiga, the one-time title challenger to Demetrious Johnson is coming off a loss to Ray Borg prior to this fight. Despite suffering consecutive losses, Sasaki still thinks Formiga is a formidable foe and is the last hurdle between him and the title shot.

“Formiga fought Cejudo and Borg and lost both fights, but he still ranks five. Actually, he’s a good yardstick for me to see where I’m at so I think if I beat this guy, I should get a title shot next.”
