URCC 30 results: Champions reign in the presence of modern-day Filipino heroes

Chris Hofmann, Do Gyeom Lee, Derrick Easterling, and Fritz Biagtan successfully defended their titles in front of soldiers from the Armed Forces of the Philippines.

Universal Reality Combat Championship (URCC) held its 30th marquee event in the iconic Araneta Coliseum. The middleweight, featherweight, flyweight, and strawweight champions defended their titles in decisive fashion to highlight the 13-bout fight card. The event also paid tribute to all the Filipino soldiers who served and died for the country.

“Kid Tornado” notches first career title defense
A confident and relaxed Fritz Biagtan entered his first title defense against Solomon “The Prodigy” Dultra. Biagtan took the fight quickly to his challenger and stunned him on his feet and brought the fight to the ground. Dultra survived but already took significant damage. In the second round, Dultra attempted a heel hook submission, but that was his best effort to steal the fight.

Biagtan amped up the volume of strikes with looping punches and knees until his opponent couldn’t take any more damage. A devastating hook to the body, followed by subsequent head strikes, made Dultra succumb in the third round.

Easterling showcases grappling dominance

Filipino-American Derrick Easterling, a protégé of former UFC lightweight Tyson Griffin, took Jiar Castillo down multiple times during their contest. Hitman MMA’s Castillo was able to neutralize the positions, but the flyweight champ Easterling kept the pressure on and scored a deep arm-triangle submission attempt.

Castillo escaped the dangerous position, but the champion’s confidence was undeniable. In the middle of the second round, Easterling showcased his striking arsenal and landed a devastating combination to the head of Castillo. He went in for the kill and landed unanswered hammer fists that caused the referee to stop the fight.

“Undead” Lee remains impressive

After a back-and-forth war against vicious Hawaiian striker Ryan dela Druz in URCC 28, South Korea’s Do Gyeom Lee returned to Manila to defend his featherweight strap against local contender Jojo Orao. Lee wasted no time and took his contender to the ground in the opening minute. Orao’s defense nulled Lee’s submission attempts, but the damage he took from strikes piled up. Lee sunk in a rear-naked choke with less than a minute remaining in the round that forced Orao to tap.

Hofmann finishes veteran contender

Chris Hofmann, URCC’s middleweight king, went toe-to-toe against Robert Sothmann of Dragon Warrior MMA. The Canadian Sothmann established leg kicks early in the fight that, at times, wobbled the champion. Unfazed by the heavy strikes, Hofmann countered with punches and bloodied his opponent’s nose. After timing and checking the Canadian’s kicks, Hofmann landed some of his own.

Inside the last minute of the first round, Hofmann connected a right straight that sent Sothmann’s back to the cage. The champion charged with more punches until he gained a dominant position on the ground. He made the veteran contender tap out with a relentless ground-and-pound attack.
