You heard that right: URCC 28 will feature 3 vs. 3 exhibition match.

URCC president and founder Alvin Aguilar announced at the URCC 28 press conference that the card set for November 6 will feature the promotion’s first ever 3-on-3 cage match.

There will be two teams going head to head: Team Chan vs. Team Estroso. Team captain Arvin Chan, Jaypee Espinosa, and John Rey Larena will make up Team Chan.

Meanwhile, Patrick dos Santos, Mark Palomar, and team captain “Sugar Ray” Panchito Estroso will account for Team Estroso.

The 3-on-3 match is exactly what it sounds like: 3 fighters will fight another 3 fights inside one cage all at the same time (much like they do in this Russian show).

Aguilar explained how this set up will work inside the URCC cage:

“All 6 fighters will be in the [cage] at the same time. It’s a team thing,” Aguilar said at the press conference. “People will think it’s a mindless brawl, but it’s not, because there’s a lot of strategy involved. For example: It’s 3-on-3; you have to make sure you situate yourself in a position where you’re always at an advantage. So what happens also to make sure, of course, that fighter safety is taken care of: Say, 1 person’s down (one person has lost), there’s an automatic buzzer outside, and all the action stops until we take the person [who lost] out [of the cage].”

“If the situation happens that it’s 3 fighters versus 1 fighter, that fighter has the option to fight or opt out,” adds Aguilar.

The URCC president also explained that, during the fight, there will be two referees inside the cage and 4 referees outside the cage. “The 4 referees outside the cage will each have their own buzzer” to stop the action, says Aguilar.

When asked why the URCC was implementing this format, Aguilar explained:

We always have to explore new formats in MMA. The URCC has had the first women’s [MMA bout in the Philippines] before. We always come up with the firsts. It’s about time we came up with this to give more fighters a chance. There’s other formats in MMA that we will be exploring later on, but I just wanna come up with more formats; we’ll have more opportunities for more fighters.”

Later on, Aguilar also later revealed that the promotion is considering formats that involve weapons like arnis sticks, should they find mechanics that they believe work.
